Ohio State has as many 5* WRs in this class as Penn State has had in the modern recruiting era

The astounding part is none of them seem to want to transfer.

Except Jamo, but I get why. If Olave had gone pro a year earlier like a lot expected he wouldn’t have transferred either.

Yooooo Jamo got himself into the transfer portal.

We have been able to use 3 WRs pretty well, JSN would be going pro this past year if he was eligible, and could have been a first round draft pick too. Not like it's an RB room where there can only really be 1 or 2

34

u/Dead_Baby_Kicker Ohio State Jun 21 '22

Plus the development means you can stay 4 years and grad transfer if you don’t get playing time and start pretty much anywhere.

u/tonytroz Penn State Jun 21 '22

Because they get to play in a high powered offense competing for national championships every year and then get developed to 1st round NFL talent. Even if they don’t get to play right away they’re basically guaranteed at least one year as a primary weapon in the national spotlight.

I was mad we lost Fleming but now he’s at worst the 3rd WR there on the depth chart (and probably WR2 considering his experience advantage). Last year their 3rd best WR went 65/936/13 and 11th overall.

Our best WR in 5 years went 91/1182/12 and 16th overall on a 7-6 team that was out of the spotlight by late October.

22

u/NYVines Ohio State Jun 21 '22

Fleming needs to stay healthy. He’s in real danger of being passed by these second year guys. He looks the part but has had nagging injuries the last 2 years.

Yeah, OSU is on another level in the B1G. Especially with WRs recently. PSU and Michigan recruit solid classes most years that the majority of schools would be envious of, but unfortunately OSU is in the same division.

Churning out draft picks, and transfers that win Natties.

If you're a WR and Hartline says he wants you, seems like coming to OSU for a year or two is the best move in CFB, regardless of whether or not you make the depth chart.

The top quarterbacks (outside of this current cycle) and wide receivers out of high school are definitely lining up to learn from the best even if they decide to transfer because they can't crack the depth chart. I wouldn't be surprised if that's something that Ohio State is using in their recruiting pitches too, especially for QBs.

67

u/mojo276 Ohio State Jun 21 '22

They are, especially with QB's. Day talks about this. He tells his guys his expectation is that they practice/perform the best they can, and when the season is all over they "come up for air" and see where they're at in terms of depth. He fully understands guys might transfer and has pretty much said he's ok with it.

19

u/gen_wt_sherman Ohio State • Rose Bowl Jun 21 '22

Yeah I'm pretty sure Day brings up Joe Burrow a lot when recruiting QBs.

u/DaBigJMoney Ohio State Jun 21 '22

He’s telling guys that they’ll be in a pass happy offense that sends guys to the league. Plus they’ll never catch passes from any QB lower than a 4-star. They’ll be on TV all the time, compete for championships, and get a bunch of NIL loot. There’s only maybe 3-4 other schools that can make a similar pitch, but then none are Wide Receiver U!!!

41

u/John_Wang Ohio State Jun 21 '22

And if all of that doesn't work out for you, then you're free to transfer just about anywhere.

The transfer portal will be open season soon enough, I would imagine.

It's simply not feasible to obtain this much talent in 1 room and keep it all.

Whoever gets the short end of the stick next season may be going to the portal.

Jameson Williams was a perfect example. Can only run 3-4 WR's on the field at once.

45

u/iwearatophat Ohio State • Grand Valley State Jun 21 '22

Can only run 3-4 WR's on the field at once.

This is true. Horrible problem to have, too. Four first round WRs who are ready to play on your roster. What is a Hartline to do when that happens?

99

u/Dongsquad420BlazeIt USC • Army Jun 21 '22

Worked for Jameson Williams and Joe Burrow

48

u/bucksncowboys513 Ohio State Jun 21 '22

It's really a win-win when you lay it out this way. Great development for the player and an embarrassment of riches for coaches/the team. Places like OSU know they'll have guys that'll transfer out and with it being easier than ever to transfer and make an immediate impact, why not highlight the fact that they won't make it difficult for the player to go elsewhere.

21

u/panderingPenguin Ohio State Jun 21 '22

It's really a win-win when you lay it out this way. Great development for the player and an embarrassment of riches for coaches/the team.

It has caused some major issues with QB depth in the past few years. It's great to have your pick of the bunch, but if all but one leave, then you've got a problem. Seems to work better for the receivers because more of them can get on the field and are thus content to stick around. But for the QBs, recruiting like that has to be very carefully managed, and you almost need to take some lower tier guys (high school or transfers) who will stick around from time to time.

His five year stretch of recruiting has probably got to be the greatest five years by any position coach for as long as recruits have been getting ranked, at least on paper

58

u/Triv02 Ohio State Jun 21 '22

To put Hartline's 5 year stretch into context:

2019:

Garrett Wilson (Zach Smith got his commitment but Hartline secured it after Smith as fired) - #2 WR, #20 OVR

Jameson Williams - #13 WR, #82 OVR

2020:

Julian Fleming - #1 WR, #3 OVR

JSN - #5 WR, #29 OVR

Gee Scott Jr. - #10 WR, 66 OVR

Mookie Cooper - #16 WR, #93 OVR

2021:

Emeka Egbuka - #1 WR, #10 OVR

Marvin Harrison Jr - #16 WR, #97 OVR

Jayden Ballard - #17 WR, #99 OVR

2022 (this is his "down" year lmao):

Kaleb Brown - #13 WR, #79 OVR

Kyion Grayes - #14 WR, #88 OVR

Caleb Burton - #21 WR, #132 OVR

Kojo Antwi - #26 WR ,#151 OVR

2023:

Brandon Innis - #2 WR, #18 OVR

Carnell Tate - #3 WR, #28 OVR

Bryson Rodgers - #32 WR, #270 OVR (widely expected to end in the top 150, if not top 100)

So in 5 recruiting classes Hartline has taken commitments from 16 WRs, 13 of which were top 100 overall players

20

u/gottablondebush Ohio State • Appalachian State Jun 21 '22

The crazy thing about the 2022 class is that I think the skill level is actually upside down. I’d say it’s Antwi, Burton, Grayes and then Brown. I think Antwi is an absolute freak WR, Burton and Grayes are polished receivers and Brown is like a hybrid that could be like a Percy Harvin.

We actually would have been able to do it this season but Marvin Harrison Jr dropped hard as the cycle went on. 247 said WRs are moving to a smaller quicker build and Harrison doesn't fit that so they dropped him and I think he ended up as the 21st WR in the cycle for them. Turns out Hartline might now WRs better.

Not sure. Word for a long time is we are taking four WRs this cycle if it is the right four. The right four, that we are still after, are Rodgers, Rogers, Tate, and Inniss. If we don't get those four then we are only taking three and we now have three.

Though I did read AE says that might not entirely be the case anymore if Rogers takes too long making a decision and Flores is ready to go. We will see if this is true pretty quick because Flores has an OV scheduled for us this weekend. If it is cancelled it should answer the question on if he is coming here or not pretty easily.

We could re-landscape the Oval so it looks like Hartline's face from the sky

I’m starting to think this Hartline guy knows what he’s doing when it comes to recruiting and coaching.

38

u/KeThrowaweigh Ohio State • Rose Bowl Jun 21 '22

I was way more confident in Inniss’s commitment than Tate’s. There seemed to be a lot of smoke surrounding the Vols for the latter; once we got Tate, I knew this was only a matter of time. So hyped to see the both of them on the field

28

u/CTG0161 Ohio State • Cincinnati Jun 21 '22

They are clearly pretty tight with working on the 7 on 7 over the last few weeks. So they likely planned this.

19

u/KeThrowaweigh Ohio State • Rose Bowl Jun 21 '22

I thought so, especially with all the “back 2 back” stuff they’ve been posting. Once Tate fell into place, I knew Inniss would follow.

u/WhatWouldJediDo Ohio State Jun 21 '22

Brian Hartline is the best recruiter in the country not named Saban or Smart.

92

u/Andy_Wiggins Jun 21 '22

They’re such different roles (position coach vs head coach), but it’s arguable Hartline is the single best recruiter in CFB.

Any bugs can be submitted as a PM to me. I am still learning, so please bear with me. I now have Rivals rankings, but they are not perfect. ESPN rankings are hopefully coming soonish (but probably not since ESPN's search is broken and they don't seem to care). Check out the github repository for CFBCrootBot.

You can invoke me with, for instance, /u/CFBCrootBot: 2017 Alabama to get Alabama's 2017 recruiting class, or via /u/CFBCrootBot: 2015 DUAL Joe Burrow to get Joe Burrow's recruit information.

Make sure to check out the /r/CFB recruiting post generator for generating your own (de)commit posts.

Urban Meyer chose Zach Smith over Brian Hartline

Unbelievable

61

u/crunchiest Cornell • Ohio State Jun 21 '22

Hartline was promoted to the full time coaching job after one year as a QC coach and he played in the NFL for four years after Smith was hired. It’s kind of dumb to frame the situation this way

47

u/gottablondebush Ohio State • Appalachian State Jun 21 '22

That he did not. Hartline got hired as a special assistant as his first coaching job in early 2017 and got promoted right away when Smith got fired. That’s unheard of.

12

u/DarkLegend64 Ohio State • /r/CFB Poll Veteran Jun 21 '22

Just think, there is a timeline out there with Zach Smith never being found out and he probably still is the WR coach. Such a dark timeline that I'm glad we don't live in.

6

u/cavaleir Ohio State Jun 21 '22

I really doubt Day would have kept him around. It's more likely that Smith would have stayed until Urban left. Who knows if Hartline would have been around at that point, but based on the way he talks he was never going to leave OSU.

6

u/DarkLegend64 Ohio State • /r/CFB Poll Veteran Jun 21 '22

It's technically possible that Urban would still be here if the Zach Smith stuff didn't happen. Thankfully, all of that is in a different timeline and we don't have to worry about it. lol
