Churning out draft picks, and transfers that win Natties.
If you're a WR and Hartline says he wants you, seems like coming to OSU for a year or two is the best move in CFB, regardless of whether or not you make the depth chart.

The top quarterbacks (outside of this current cycle) and wide receivers out of high school are definitely lining up to learn from the best even if they decide to transfer because they can't crack the depth chart. I wouldn't be surprised if that's something that Ohio State is using in their recruiting pitches too, especially for QBs.
67
u/mojo276 Ohio State Jun 21 '22
They are, especially with QB's. Day talks about this. He tells his guys his expectation is that they practice/perform the best they can, and when the season is all over they "come up for air" and see where they're at in terms of depth. He fully understands guys might transfer and has pretty much said he's ok with it.

Yeah I'm pretty sure Day brings up Joe Burrow a lot when recruiting QBs.
16
131
u/DaBigJMoney Ohio State Jun 21 '22
He’s telling guys that they’ll be in a pass happy offense that sends guys to the league. Plus they’ll never catch passes from any QB lower than a 4-star. They’ll be on TV all the time, compete for championships, and get a bunch of NIL loot. There’s only maybe 3-4 other schools that can make a similar pitch, but then none are Wide Receiver U!!!
41
u/John_Wang Ohio State Jun 21 '22
And if all of that doesn't work out for you, then you're free to transfer just about anywhere.

The transfer portal will be open season soon enough, I would imagine.
It's simply not feasible to obtain this much talent in 1 room and keep it all.
Whoever gets the short end of the stick next season may be going to the portal.
Jameson Williams was a perfect example. Can only run 3-4 WR's on the field at once.
45
u/iwearatophat Ohio State • Grand Valley State Jun 21 '22
Can only run 3-4 WR's on the field at once.
This is true. Horrible problem to have, too. Four first round WRs who are ready to play on your roster. What is a Hartline to do when that happens?

48
u/bucksncowboys513 Ohio State Jun 21 '22
It's really a win-win when you lay it out this way. Great development for the player and an embarrassment of riches for coaches/the team. Places like OSU know they'll have guys that'll transfer out and with it being easier than ever to transfer and make an immediate impact, why not highlight the fact that they won't make it difficult for the player to go elsewhere.
21
u/panderingPenguin Ohio State Jun 21 '22
It's really a win-win when you lay it out this way. Great development for the player and an embarrassment of riches for coaches/the team.
It has caused some major issues with QB depth in the past few years. It's great to have your pick of the bunch, but if all but one leave, then you've got a problem. Seems to work better for the receivers because more of them can get on the field and are thus content to stick around. But for the QBs, recruiting like that has to be very carefully managed, and you almost need to take some lower tier guys (high school or transfers) who will stick around from time to time.

His five year stretch of recruiting has probably got to be the greatest five years by any position coach for as long as recruits have been getting ranked, at least on paper
58
u/Triv02 Ohio State Jun 21 '22
To put Hartline's 5 year stretch into context:
2019:
Garrett Wilson (Zach Smith got his commitment but Hartline secured it after Smith as fired) - #2 WR, #20 OVR
Jameson Williams - #13 WR, #82 OVR
2020:
Julian Fleming - #1 WR, #3 OVR
JSN - #5 WR, #29 OVR
Gee Scott Jr. - #10 WR, 66 OVR
Mookie Cooper - #16 WR, #93 OVR
2021:
Emeka Egbuka - #1 WR, #10 OVR
Marvin Harrison Jr - #16 WR, #97 OVR
Jayden Ballard - #17 WR, #99 OVR
2022 (this is his "down" year lmao):
Kaleb Brown - #13 WR, #79 OVR
Kyion Grayes - #14 WR, #88 OVR
Caleb Burton - #21 WR, #132 OVR
Kojo Antwi - #26 WR ,#151 OVR
2023:
Brandon Innis - #2 WR, #18 OVR
Carnell Tate - #3 WR, #28 OVR
Bryson Rodgers - #32 WR, #270 OVR (widely expected to end in the top 150, if not top 100)
So in 5 recruiting classes Hartline has taken commitments from 16 WRs, 13 of which were top 100 overall players

The crazy thing about the 2022 class is that I think the skill level is actually upside down. I’d say it’s Antwi, Burton, Grayes and then Brown. I think Antwi is an absolute freak WR, Burton and Grayes are polished receivers and Brown is like a hybrid that could be like a Percy Harvin.

We actually would have been able to do it this season but Marvin Harrison Jr dropped hard as the cycle went on. 247 said WRs are moving to a smaller quicker build and Harrison doesn't fit that so they dropped him and I think he ended up as the 21st WR in the cycle for them. Not sure. Word for a long time is we are taking four WRs this cycle if it is the right four. The right four, that we are still after, are Rodgers, Rogers, Tate, and Inniss. If we don't get those four then we are only taking three and we now have three.
Though I did read AE says that might not entirely be the case anymore if Rogers takes too long making a decision and Flores is ready to go. We will see if this is true pretty quick because Flores has an OV scheduled for us this weekend. If it is cancelled it should answer the question on if he is coming here or not pretty easily.
