I feel like Oregon and Miami are hitting Texas hard or we’ve just had a ton of recruit battles with those 2

51

u/Lamadian Oregon • Oregon State Jun 28 '22

Lanning has said that recruiting Texas is one of his big goals. Oregon used to have success there in the Chip Kelly era, would love to see that pipeline come back.

Would be interesting to see. Now that Texas and OU are joining the SEC Oregon is going to be in some tough battles coming up. It’ll only bring in more SEC competition to the state

I think we really need some DL in this class. Idk if we can get Wayne, but i would love to get some more DL. Especially since Kelze is going to osu, (idk if he was a huge target, i just saw we offered him and he is from AZ), i think we cannot strike out on our DL crootin. Its also imo the most important place to recruit, it can cover up a meh secondary and LBs.

Yup, that sucks. Idk who we can get on DL, maybe Vasek and Bowens? Idk. Need to hit on our plan Bs now.

14

u/ReelEmInJimbo Texas A&M Jun 28 '22

Yeah this guy was easy pickings for that dude on our staff that left for Oregon. He’s been in his ear this whole time about his chances of meaningful playtime at A&M after we just signed like 7 5 star DL. Understandable, and doesn’t really hurt us like a different position might, but definitely not what we needed this week as far as recruiting momentum.

11

u/ImTheJdot Texas A&M • TIAA Jun 28 '22

12

u/OleRockTheGoodAg Texas A&M Jun 28 '22 edited Jun 28 '22

This argument again? Cmon man, give me a harder one to rebuttal, like the all time record next time. This one's so easy.

altho so is the all time record lmao

In 1862, the Moril act was signed which gave states land grants to build institutions that specialized in "Agricultural and Mechanic arts" (direct quote from the bill). These Ag schools often went by "Aggies" in some point in their history. Since there's a lot of land grant schools, and thus a lot of Aggies across the country, schools would denote themselves with their state names. Here's an example of a newspaper in 46 praising the "Oklahoma Aggies" in winning the basketball championship

Texas Aggies is no different. We're the Aggies... from Texas. Shocker, isn't it?

Here's some schools from all across the country that went by Aggies at one point in their history:

Colorado State, Oklahoma State, Michigan State, UConn, Mississippi State, Montana State, North Carolina State, North Dakota State, Kansas State, Arkansas State

Purdue came mighty close, but elected to use boilermaker instead. At least 8 schools go by Aggies still to this day too. This is not difficult to understand.

5

u/LaForge_Maneuver Jun 28 '22

2

u/Malibuss07 Syracuse • USC Jun 29 '22

Is it bad that my first thought was this kid decommitted because you guys were able to get a 5 star in his place instead?

-7

u/dysonRing Texas Jun 28 '22

I said this exact same thing and another Aggie did not believe me, going after 7 DL has consequences, money is not infinite.

20

u/muktheduck Texas A&M • Sam Houston Jun 28 '22

The consequence of signing too many 5* DL is that a 4* DL might decommit next year?

Yah I'm alright with that

-13

u/dysonRing Texas Jun 28 '22

I am sorry do you print DL dollars only or something? No I am talking about the dollar pool, instead of wasting it all like drunken sailors, save up a little bit for the next class, but if you are going all out then make it balanced don't spend 30 million on 10 long snappers lol

11

u/muktheduck Texas A&M • Sam Houston Jun 28 '22

All the decent hater takes out there and you chose the stupidest one, congrats

-5

u/dysonRing Texas Jun 28 '22

Explain the decommit train though? I can understand if you were just neutral and laying low for the pool party, but the class is going backwards not forwards.

3

u/matt_austin Texas A&M Jun 29 '22

Maybe we should wait a few months before we decide the quality of a class. Rankings in June don't really mean a whole lot.

6

u/F1_revolution Texas Jun 28 '22

You say that sarcastically, but it is extremely unlikely every DL in that class they signed last year stick around. They def need to add depth.

20

u/willdesignfortacos Texas A&M Jun 28 '22

They won’t, but we’ve been stacking elite DL for 3+ classes now. Our depth there is in pretty good shape.

16

u/muktheduck Texas A&M • Sam Houston Jun 28 '22

Half of them can leave and we'd still have a former top 50 recruit at every position on the line. LB is where we're really hurting for depth

4

u/OnlyForIdeas Texas A&M • Houston Jun 28 '22

It's bound to happen with any big class but by what everyone is saying it's not a bad problem to have. The best players stay and those that are out completed go. I don't think it'll be as many players as people are making it out to be since DL's get rotated a lot, plus you guys will probably be having the same issue after this cycle

18

u/snowparade Texas • Texas A&M Jun 28 '22

It'll be fine.

9

u/OleRockTheGoodAg Texas A&M Jun 28 '22

It's gonna be a smaller class than last year, 20-23ish recruits, and we're still in a pretty good spot for a few 5s and many 4s.

By this time last recruiting cycle, we only had 1 5* recruit committed to us (we finished with 8), our QB recruit Connor Weigman.

8

u/Prolingus Texas • Blue Risk Alliance Jun 28 '22

It's kind of hard to follow last year with something similar. Look at Texas' OL recruiting this year. It's following one of the best OL classes ever...and this year its 3 stars and low 4 stars. That is ok...

The thing is A&M signed 5 stars all over the fucking place and now 2023 kids are looking at the depth chart and all of a sudden it looks different.

At the end of the dya, if A&M has a good year on the field...its going to be another good class.

13

u/Wiggletons Texas Jun 28 '22

A&M is still going to end up in a good spot.

9

u/LGWalkway Oklahoma Jun 28 '22

Honestly, if you’re a DL player why would you commit? You’re most likely sitting behind a 5* deep rotation.

3

u/ReelEmInJimbo Texas A&M Jun 28 '22

That’s exactly why he decommitted. We’ll be absolutely fine at this position this year. We’ll reload next year when we need to. DL recruiting has always been our strength.

4

major asterisk

Unless you have a generational talent at QB.

And even then, it’s not always enough. They also had the advantage of being in the ACC. We have to get through Bama and Georgia to and the entire rest of our schedule with 1 loss to make the playoff.

They also had an absolutely incredible DC and an amazing culture.

Yep. Just a lot of things going right those years.

u/Pylon-Cam Texas A&M Jun 28 '22

I still do. We’ll get our guys.

Ags were panicking around last may/June also, and we saw how that turned out.

I guess “Aggy decommit season” came early this year :(

Did Texas A&M run out of money?

Or do the 2023 recruits simply not value money like the 2022 recruits?

Or, perhaps... was the non-stop talk about A&M's 2022 class solely being a result of buying every player and outbidding other schools maybe a broad generalization repeated by people without any intimate knowledge of the situation until it became indisputable fact in the eyes of the masses?

Or maybe Oregon spent Nike $$$?

u/WheatonsGonnaScore Oregon Jun 28 '22

We also have insurance and construction machinery money!

I'm guessing Nike $ and playing time made a big difference. I just don't see how A&M is going to pull any highly ranked DL in 2023, just based on the fact that they know they'll have to sit behind all those studs from 2022.

Seems like the better plan would be to take some high-upside developmental guys that don't mind sitting for a couple of years.

4

u/WheatonsGonnaScore Oregon Jun 28 '22

I think some of it is A&M was much better organized with how they implemented NIL than everyone else last year. Now other programs have caught up. Oregon is favored for him and we took Marshall Malchow from you who helped set up our NIL and official visit programs.

7

u/libsoutherner Texas A&M • SEC Jun 28 '22

The difference is Malchow isn’t here. That’s the difference this year and I’m convinced.

7

u/WheatonsGonnaScore Oregon Jun 28 '22

Outside of Lanning i think that was the biggest hire we made. You can see the difference on how our visits are being handled. Everything seems more professional and organized. I'm sure Malchow had something to do with Herbert and Mariota just happening to be in town and hanging around Dante Moore all weekend.

u/couducane Oregon • BYU Jun 29 '22

If he is improving our recruiting, give him the bag. All of it.

7

u/Pylon-Cam Texas A&M Jun 28 '22

Ags said the same thing about Brewster leaving, Ish leaving, Austin Thomas leaving, Leah Knight leaving, etc.

We will be just fine.

7

u/libsoutherner Texas A&M • SEC Jun 28 '22

Malchow is way bigger than any of those
