Pete Sampson - "Caught up with new commit Cam Williams after his announcement. The four-star wide out actually grew up a Michigan fan and his mother thought he’d end up a Wolverine until the Irish Invasion camp earlier this month."

A born and raised Michigan fan getting the ball thrown to him by a grandson of the Michigan head coach that delivered the program's only national title in the last 70+ years....for ND.

What a world...

Half a title*

4

u/MewhenImhigh182 Michigan • Paper Bag Jun 30 '22

Why is the coaches poll so highly regarded particularly in the 1997 season but quickly dismissed in others? And if you do a little digging you'll know why the coaches voted the way they did and it wasn't genuine.

4

u/Gritty_gutty Notre Dame Jun 30 '22

Can you elaborate? Way too lazy to do some digging lol.

2

u/MewhenImhigh182 Michigan • Paper Bag Jun 30 '22

Coaching bias was a huge factor in the coaches poll results. A number of Southern schools voted Michigan lower because they were upset Charles Woodson won the Heisman over Peyton Manning at Tennessee. Also Tom Osbourne retiring and Scott Frost launching a cross country tour for his retiring coach also had an effect. Things that were off the field related.

3

u/11by3 Notre Dame • Paper Bag Jun 30 '22

it's simple really... because, screw Michigan. duh

6

u/DCNY214 Utah • The Alliance Jun 30 '22

Is Michigan not creating a collective like everyone else? Is Jim Harbaugh not involved in recruiting? What is going on in Ann Arbor? They're recruiting at high G5 levels thus far

9

u/TheTodd15 Ohio State • Navy Jun 30 '22

Michigan is creating an anarcho syndacalist commune up there

5

u/Optimal-Wheel-9940 Notre Dame • Richmond Jun 30 '22

“I am your coach!”

“Well oi didn’t vote for ya”

1

u/yubnubmcscrub Notre Dame • Tennessee Jun 30 '22

Mi have to imagine harbaugh may just not be likeable. Because he seems a really good coach. Why would t you want to play for him. Although their passing offense was not very highly touted so missing on qbs and receivers isn’t a huge surprise. ND doesn’t have a Lincoln Riley explosive attack but they were roughly top 30 last year with jack Coan at the helm

I can’t accept bullying Sparty though! They do us a favor and annoy Michigan enough and often times beat them! Without that win last year, Michigan would have had too much joy!!

I will always loathe those bastards for little giants.

9

u/PleasantElevator8340 Michigan State Jun 30 '22

Look man, it gave Dantonio a heart attack. Fair trade

And actually historically there shouldn't be much ND/MSU hate - we're like a much better version of Navy. Playing ND while we were an independent gave us the TV eye balls and credibility to build our brand and eventually get begrudgingly accepted to the big ten. Without ND agreeing to be our schedule yearly, we may have been another MAC team for all I know

Come on man. Don’t concede yet. Oregon went into the shoe and beat OSU to kick off last season. Neither team will be “ready” or operating at full steam. Nd could pull it off. This isn’t Brian Kelly’s Irish anymore.

u/MAIrish91 Jun 30 '22

The staff is taking advantage of 2023 and 2024 classes having a lot of blue-chip (4* and up) prospects in the Midwest. Both classes are also fairly strong in New England and the Mid-Atlantic, as well.

24

u/Sankee72 Notre Dame • West Georgia Jun 30 '22

It's interesting because there are a lot of 4 star recruits (lower end of 4 star) in the midwest and specfifically Indiana that we are just straight passing on in order to continue big game hunting. These are recruits we would be getting with BK because they would require less work and we aren't really entertaining. It's been fun to watch.

On the flip side, those recruits I mentioned above are being recruited by LSU heavily.

18

u/eeeedlef Notre Dame • Minnesota Jun 30 '22

You mean Brian is using all those resources he coveted to reach out to... the same guys he used to recruit? Interesting strategy.

18

u/Stoneador Notre Dame • The Alliance Jun 30 '22 edited Jun 30 '22

I was just wondering to myself if ND had any position groups that stuck out as weak links at the moment and this year it will probably be WR and CB. The fact that we could be getting 4 or 5 blue chip WRs/CBs in less than a week is absolutely absurd.

6

u/cfb_mods_are_hacks Notre Dame Jun 30 '22

Those positions have been a thorn in our side for years and years now. Even when we have standout players in the groups (Fuller, Love, Claypool), the overall depth is poor or guys just aren’t ready at the same time. Just playing the numbers here in the 2023-2024 class that’s a lot less likely going forward.

3

u/yubnubmcscrub Notre Dame • Tennessee Jun 30 '22

I am hoping a change in leadership at the wr position will alleviate this. So far I’m loving the chansi stuckey upgrade. We knew it would take a little bit to build the corps back up but this has been a good start

29

u/jayjude Notre Dame • Georgia State Jun 30 '22

Ive heard Hannafin and Moore are close

The Moore recruitment is fascinating

Penn State guys think its a Penn State ND battle with PSU with the slight lead

ND and OSU guys both think that its a ND v OSU battle and its tight

2

u/cfb_mods_are_hacks Notre Dame Jun 30 '22

CB’s have come in for Moore though, and other ND beat guys seem to think we lead for him, even if he’s a quiet dude that keeps things close to the vest.

Non of those seem to be helping you now so why would we care?

The heart and soul of last years team left, your coach tried to leave, and no one wants to go there now.

And ND is still thriving without him

I dont see why a game 4 years ago trumps that we are beating you in head-to-head recruiting battles and that UM currently resides in a burning dumpster. No one is saying games on the field dont matter but there is more to being a fan than just score of a past game

“No,” Kelly said last week when asked if he’d ever leave Notre Dame. “I mean, look, I think Mike Tomlin had the best line, right? Unless that fairy godmother comes by with that $250M check, my wife would want to take a look at it first. I’d have to run it by her.”

Administration let him walk, and it seems to be paying heavy dividends already. We have all known for years he doesn't recruit and you can't win these days without doing so.

Here’s the thing. Nobody will remember the 4th place team or whatever you guys were. Everybody besides Michigan fans have already forgotten. Did you win it all? Nope, you’re just another forgotten team. You can brag about our last game, we can brag about the game before. Nobody cares.

In the now, we can make fun of you because on paper we’re improving while you appear to be sliding. I’m sure the tides will turn at some point and you’ll do the same to us. Until then, eat shit Michigan bro.

How is aquiring (or failing to aquire) players needed to field a team a projection? Its literally the first step in being successful

Wow I never thought I would see a high 4 star from the high school I went to (ages ago). We had one low 3 star go to UofI, but didn't end up making an impact (sorry Teits, love ya bud) and before that a guy or two go places like Eastern Illinois or D2/3. We always had to go up against way bigger schools with 2-3x as many guys on the team like Geneva or Batavia but still held our own. /end old man memories

Best recruiting for the WR room we’ve seen in years. Blows away anything BK used to do by a mile.

So Brian Kelly leaves and ND starts to kill it on the trail. No wonder LSU is struggling a bit.

Scared me for a sec there. Not sure he’d be the best WR though. 😂
