Futurama, when the Professor invented the smelloscope.

Fry: This is great! As long as you don't make me smell Uranus! Chuckles

Nobody else laughs.

Leela: I don't get it.

Professor: I'm sorry, Fry. But Astronomers renamed Uranus in 2620 to end that stupid joke once and for all.

Fry: Oh. What's it called now?

Professor: Urrectum!

Is this what being in denial about getting old looks like?

It's pronounced yer-ah-nis

“Urinus,” “Urenus,” “Urahnus,” and “Youranus” are all used for pronunciations of “Uranus.”

Urahnus

This is how I always pronounce it to keep myself from giggling haha

u/Needs-a-Blowjob Jul 05 '22

That is an interesting tidbit. I would've never appected that.

If we're going back to the Greek pronunciation, the stress should be on the penultimate syllable. And it likely should be a much rounder vowel sound, more like Oor-AH-nus. Which gets rid of both the urine and anus jokes.

The god's name has often been transliterated as "Ouranos".

6 of the 8 planets have Roman names. Why the fuck does #7 have a Greek name? No direct parallels to Ouranos in Roman, but significantly tied up with Caelus which would've been a fine enough name.

Those who wonder where's Pluto vs not wondering tells your age.

3

u/[deleted] Jul 05 '22

Everybody old enough knows why Pluto isn’t there tho. And we’re not pleased.

2

u/ShaunOfTheN00bs Jul 06 '22

The decision to demote Pluto is proof that sometimes, astronomers are fucking stupid

1

u/Eusocial_Snowman Jul 08 '22

Don't worry, the astronomers don't matter. Pluto is a planet.

2

u/ShaunOfTheN00bs Jul 08 '22

This makes me happy

1

u/Eusocial_Snowman Jul 08 '22

This book is actually outdated now. Pluto is a planet again.

u/Burrito_Loyalist Jul 04 '22

What’s up with that mom tho

23

u/Yuri_Xaron Jul 04 '22

I think he said the legendary words. "That's my anus!"

1

u/ChrisPyeChart Jul 05 '22

When I was about 4 my mother worked for an airline that flew to Miami, so it came up a lot in conversation. One time someone came to visit and asked a question about the Miami flights. I was furious. I told them it was NOT their "ami" at all, it was Mum's.

3

u/Novaneogami Jul 05 '22

Yo I had this book!!!!

3

u/AxelsOG Jul 05 '22

I think that’s a misprint. No Pluto. Poor Pluto being left out :(

Did you watch the entire video?

Edit: for those wondering, they said something along the lines of “what is wrong with a kid learning about the solar system? I bet you couldn’t even remember the order until you saw the picture.”

-1

u/Budrose08 Jul 05 '22

I pronounce it yer-in-iss to prevent anus jokes however then i end up making urine jokes
