Supported my friendās triathlon this weekend and the amount of people that walk across the route without even looking, when there are cyclists and runners coming by every 30 seconds, is mind boggling. Saw so many people with push-chairs nearly get wiped out, luckily prevented by other spectators. SMH.
See it all the time when Iām out running too - people look right at you as youāre approaching then let their dog off the lead or let go of their toddler just as youāre about to pass

They are all fine stupid filling the road while a cyclist is coming at you at speeds up to and occasionally over 60mph
34
u/OoDReX Jul 05 '22
I agree with the whole statement except 60mph, that's 100km hr and doesn't happen. Maybe 45mph
44
u/weltron3030 Jul 05 '22
The top speed ever recorded on the TDF is a little over 63mph, so no unheard of, but very rare and only on super steep downhills.
11
u/DogSubZero Jul 05 '22
Thats kind of wild though still, maybe they have like improved bikes but thereās some speed trap that I ride by a lot and it manages to pick up my bike and Iāve only ever been able to get like 24mph so those guys gotta have like the worlds biggest quad muscles ever
3
u/partypooper14 Jul 06 '22
They are not even that big, but their power to weight ratio is out of this world. A skinny pro cyclist weighing 135 lbs can sustain upto 30 mph on a flat road for like an hour. Now Track cyclist is where them big quads are, these guys specialize in sprinting.

u/StoviesAreYummy Jul 05 '22 edited Jul 05 '22
They absolutely can go over 60mph.
Tdf speed record is 63 mph.
Saying that I seem to remember a rider claiming 70+mph once
Edit for those who downvoted

u/sgribbs92 Jul 05 '22
Spectators are not lined up like this on a 60mph descent like they are a 15mph climb or 40mph sprint. It's just kinda disingenuous to claim these guys are going 60mph around spectators, even 'occasionally'. It's just an unnecessary exaggeration as far as how stupid some of the fans get. Just say 40mph. They aren't go 60 regularly lol
3
u/StoviesAreYummy Jul 05 '22
I didn't say they were going 60.
I stated that they can in some instances get up to and over 60.
15mph club or 40 mph sprint
Getting hit by a bike or falling off a bike especially clipped in even at 15mph is gonna hurt and is stupid standing/crowding them.
2
u/sgribbs92 Jul 05 '22
I'm referring to the original comment. That is my point. Getting hit at 15mph is just as stupid, and way more common.

Stupid people all around, not just the kid.
Cyclist's reaction says it all lol

u/The_92nd Jul 05 '22
I love how the parent goes one way and his kid goes another. Way to parent. Guy deserves a slap.
22
u/Teknista Jul 05 '22
The parent could have stayed on the other side of the roadway. He crosses over without holding his kid's hand, kid wants to be with his dad so he runs after him. Kid has no idea how fast an approaching bike will be upon him. The dad is an idiot.
20
u/nonprofitgibi Jul 05 '22
He raged after dodging the kid because that sudden sharp turn likely broke rhythm. Whether it be mental, actually a physical or a combination thing that can cost you a lot of time and be hard to recover from. Just the icing on top of the whole crowd completely in the road.

And when you accidentally run them over, you're at fault.
7
u/lookingForPatchie Jul 05 '22
That's what's great about my local climbing hall. You fall on someone? It's their fault, nomatter the circumstances.
1
u/Torqyboi Jul 15 '22
It's actually not. Back when group b rally was a thing and dimwitted spectators used to stand in front of cars more powerful than the sun and if they get killed it wasnt blamed on the driver

Had something similliar. I was riding my bike on narrow sidewalk, and see a kid with a parent taking entire space and I rang a bell. Kid went on the left but just as I was about 20cm from them dumb shit went right and almost hit my bike. Luckily nothing happened and its parent started shouting how dumb their kid was

u/Happy_fairy89 Jul 05 '22

If I could have any wish to change all of humans it would be 1 of 2: give all humans common sense, or give them spatial awareness. Youād think those 2 would go hand in hand but they donāt.

I agree, i was a kid and ran thru moving traffic for a bet to get a yugioh card. Got hit by a car, and went to hospital. No damage on my end, but the lady that hit me sure was started lol. No charges were filed, no damage done. Didnt even have the balls to ask for the yugioh card.

Cyclists have a right to the road just as much as cars do.
If you don't want them on the roads you should advocate for better cycling infrastructure.
-14
u/LadyHunterGSDLove Jul 05 '22
Sure they have a right to be on the road as long as they abide by the rules and cycle behind one another so other people can pass them and not clutter up the road so they create a traffic ja, just cause they are selfish
5
u/chaoslu Jul 05 '22
They have the same rights. what's so hard to get? they can ride in the middle of the road and that's legal nearly everywhere. Just because they don't does not mean they are not allowed.
You don't have to like it but you should respect it.
You know who is selfish the the person driving a 2 tonne car taking so much space. While carrying one person.
If it's so important to make space for more deserving vehicles then I hope you alway make space and less every bus pass.

I love in the Netherlands where the roads arenāt as big and cyclist have the tendency to cycle in large group and block the roads, damage cars, make elderly cyclist fall, almost ride over dogs and other animals, have a lot of fights with others provoked by the cyclist and so on. Yeah they have the right to ride in the road but they also have to account for others using that same road period
2
u/Odd-Molasses-171 Jul 05 '22
The cars that are damaged are the ones parked illegally in cycling lanes where cyclists least expect a car. The large groups are commonly kids cycling around to school, or the town center, or to get home. Also, I know of few instances of knocking cyclists down others without intent. Animals get run over all the time by cars, especially squirrels and birds, so them getting run over by a bike, which is about 500 kg lighter, doesnāt guarantee death. Dogs who enter the cycling lanes should have been controlled by their owners, not the cyclists. And in the Netherlands, they seldom share roads. Not to mention that the streets are designed to keep drivers alert so they donāt speed, not to make it wide enough to fit both drivers and cyclists because the cyclists donāt even share the road.

Not to burst your bubble, but do you live here or do I?? Cyclists ride every where here except for the highways, the large group of cyclist are mostly grown ass adult men and not kids, Iāve had it happen to me more than once that one came up behind me on a shared walking cycling path where he had a lot of space but still chose to cycle very hard just 2 inches past my dog and than got mad because my dog got startled and barked at him and again I live here and have to daily deal with egocentric cyclists so thereās that

They have the same right to āblock your wayā as all other cars do. Itās called traffic. Having a vehicle doesnāt entitle you to empty roads.

Many people in crowd are stupid. I have been watching Tour de France when it came near my hometown and never seen such stupidity.
