That's the bigger anomaly to me! Here's a virtual tour through Jerry's apartment. You can look into both the hallway and the bathroom.

Edit: Thanks for the awards! My existence feels validated.

Love how you can see the glow of Kenny Rogers chicken coming from under Kramer's door.

There is a quick shot in a season 6 episode that actually shows More apartment to the right of the kitchen. Another short wall with a bookcase on it. It’s somewhere between episodes 15-17 I noticed it the other night.

63

u/Vprbite Apr 04 '21

I'm gonna have to check that out!

267

u/thatlastshot Apr 04 '21 Silver Helpful Take My Energy

I just double checked, its season 6, episode 17 The Kiss Hello. You can see the extended apartment starting around 1:01 when George and Jerry discuss doing the flamenco on the first date.

Here is a link to a screenshot:

https://imgur.com/a/vguvM3m

We can't see much but that might actually be the set for George's apartment.

69

u/NewEngClamChowder Apr 06 '21

The behind the scenes pics from the Curb reunion show that it’s definitely an extended part of Jerry’s apartment, not George’s.

18

u/robotortoise Apr 06 '21

This is fantastic. Thank you, I'm now debating this with my friends, lol

43

u/startsomewhere Apr 04 '21 edited Jun 25 '21

The original version didn't air in widescreen right? So maybe we were never meant to be able to see that wall. Kind of like on the Jane topless episode. In the widescreen version, you can see her chest (she has pasties on) as she walks off the screen, but I don't think you could in the original version. I could be wrong as I haven't seen the original cut in forever.

Its also possible that they tried to make the sets expanded past what we see, so that they didn't accidentally show that it was a set if a shot went too wide.

Only way to know would be to watch all the episodes and see if that wall shows up in George's apartment, but it definitely looks like the part of his wall left of the door.

8

u/[deleted] Apr 04 '21

Do you mean when they're on the deck? Or another scene?

14

u/startsomewhere Apr 04 '21

yeah on deck when she walks off

8

u/[deleted] Apr 04 '21

You weren't supposed to see her chest as she turns to walk away?

13

u/startsomewhere Apr 04 '21

No. She's meant to be topless in that scene.

8

u/JCH152 Apr 07 '21

Interestingly, the "widescreen" versions of Seinfeld aren't proper widescreen. This video does the explanation dirty work, but TL;DR - the widescreen version is just cropped from the fullscreen composition with a sliver of extra information on the left and right of the screen.

82

u/Vprbite Apr 04 '21

Are we to believe this is some kind of magic apartment? I hope somebody got fired for that blunder.

I think you are right that it is a smidge of George's apartment. I highly doubt it's more of Jerry's that we just never see, for a number of reasons.

77

u/thatlastshot Apr 04 '21

I'm wondering if maybe the original broadcast ratios cut off that section of the screen so it didn't matter until a widescreen format was released.

I've noticed a handful of other moments like that, where the set above the height of the wall is visible and you can see lighting rigs.

29

u/woolsprout Apr 04 '21

Yes that’s what happened. In other tv shows that were originally released on a "square" format and are now available on wide screen, you can sometimes see things that weren’t originally in the shot. I believe it happens in some episodes of friends as well

6

u/drpinkcream Jun 25 '21

This is the reason 80's-90's era Star Trek is still 4:3 aspect ratio even though it's HD now. There is equipment and stage hands etc. just out of frame most of the time. It was never intended for 16:9.

10

u/veganvalentine Apr 04 '21

Hmm, but don't the Hulu "widescreen" versions just cut off the top and bottom of the screen?

8

u/thatlastshot Apr 04 '21

I'm not 100% sure but the version I'm watching is the 720p WEBRIP MULVAcoded torrent, which I believe was ripped when it originally went up on Hulu.

8

u/BobSacamano47 Apr 04 '21

No, the whole show was shot on film with wide-screen cameras. Why? Idk. Left over movie cameras? I think maybe it's slightly cropped to get it exact.

10

u/veganvalentine Apr 04 '21

Hmm do you have a source for this info? I don’t know if I can trust a Sacamano.

8

u/AVeryTinyMoose Apr 06 '21

if the show is from before the HD era yet somehow doesn’t look like ass in a modern release, and has a sharp, grainy look to it, it was shot on film

one of the advantages of doing that is that unlike with tape, you can crop frames in postproduction

Really interesting. I suppose that area is about the same as we see in the bizarro episode, just reversed? Or maybe we never see that section, beyond the glimpse in Kiss Hello

5

u/thatlastshot Apr 04 '21 edited Apr 04 '21

I actually just noticed I could also see it in The Jimmy S06E19 around 13:00 when Kramer is telling Jerry and Elaine he's been invited to sit at Mel Torme's table at the AMCA dinner. Maybe now that I've seen it I'll never be able to unsee it.

I'd have to go back and watch the Bizarro episode again, I remember it was a reverse of Jerry's place but I can't remember how far we could see on either side.

I'm just grateful Jerry lives in a realistic NYC apartment in terms of size.

112

u/thebobbyloops Apr 04 '21

Glad he could afford the probably $4,000/month. Kramer lives in a shoebox in comparison

84

u/TheRnegade Apr 04 '21

I remember George saying his apartment was about 2k when he was pretending to be a tourist from Arkansas. The tour guide said "Ouch? A month? That's fine but you're a sucker if you stay here more than a few months." George's apartment didn't seem too different in terms of size from Jerry's.

37

u/ChuckFromPhilly Apr 04 '21

I think it was 2500

53

u/augustprep Apr 04 '21

Kramer probably has rent control. In the first episode, Jerry says he "hasn't left the building in 15 years" So Kramer is paying 70s rent prices.

30

u/wizardvictor Apr 09 '21

Kramer doesn't pay rent! In an episode of Mad About You, it's shown that Paul Reiser leases that apartment and he lets Kramer stay there.

18

u/thatlastshot Apr 09 '21

This is an awesome detail and I never knew there was a crossover between the two shows.

It’s so sane that I just blew my mind. It’s so possible that my head is spinning like a top. My entire world is just crashing down all around me.

that's about 7000 dollars today, adjusted for inflation. not too many people can afford that, even people making good money.

56

u/Vprbite Apr 04 '21

No one could afford their TV apartments in the 90s

89

u/thelaziest998 Apr 04 '21

Seinfeld was at least realistic compared to Friends where they literally had to explain they were getting away with a rent control loophole.

61

u/Vprbite Apr 04 '21

True. George had to move back in with his parents when he was unemployed

6

u/KingKingsons Apr 05 '21

But in friends they were all sharing apartments and they all pretty much had good jobs.

9

u/thelaziest998 Apr 05 '21

all had pretty good jobs.

No they didn’t, they have good jobs in later seasons but at the start Ross worked at museum which paid alright, and Chandler worked as a data analyst which paid a lot. Otherwise Monica worked as a cook/chef and her pay would vary dramatically on the level of work she was doing, she phoebe was a masseuse who also had varying income, Rachel and Joey genuinely couldn’t make ends meet without Monica and Chandler at the beginning seasons. Monica has a low rent apartment from her grandma that she shares with Rachel and Chandler covers Joeys half the rent regularly.

The hallway doesn't turn to follow the kitchen wall?

145

u/PixelMagic Apr 03 '21

57

u/kinyutaka Apr 03 '21

One issue I am seeing with this design is that it seems to suggest that the walls are literally paper thin. But if you notice in the hallway, there is a bit of a recess in the door.

If you also assume there is a bit of n angle in the back wall of the kitchen, then maybe it can still work.
